A new edition of the Nuno Grande Doctoral Scholarships (BDNG) is now open, with a global amount of €75,000 to support the advanced training of physician-researchers in Portugal. The initiative will once again award three scholarships worth €25,000 each to physicians enrolled in a doctoral programme in the field of Fundamental Health Sciences.
Created by the Prof. Nuno Grande family, the Abel Salazar School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) of the University of Porto, and the Bial Foundation, the BDNG aim to encourage young physicians to combine clinical practice with teaching and scientific research.
Portuguese or foreign citizens may apply, provided they hold a degree or master's in Medicine, are involved in medical teaching at any Portuguese medical school, and are enrolled in a doctoral programme in the field of Fundamental Health Sciences at a Portuguese university.
The Nuno Grande Doctoral Scholarships were created in 2022 in honour of physician, researcher and professor Nuno Grande, founder of ICBAS, who was connected with the Bial Foundation for over 20 years.
Since the first edition, the initiative has supported research projects in autoimmune diseases, encephalitis, haemato-oncology, chronic inflammatory diseases, neurodegenerative diseases and cardiovascular diseases.
Applications are open until 16 January 2027 and will be evaluated by a jury chaired by Henrique Cyrne Carvalho, Director of ICBAS. The regulations and application form are available here.
