Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica 2026: Last call
Award with a total amount of €120,000 open for applications until August 31. At least one of the authors must be a native physician of a Portuguese-speaking country.

Just a few weeks left to apply for the 22nd edition of the Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica, which recognises an original intellectual work in the field of medicine, on any free topic, with an associated clinical research component. The submission deadline is August 31.
With a prize value of €100,000, the main award also includes the publication, in an exclusive first edition, in print and/or digital format, of the winning work. The jury may also grant up to two Honourable Mentions, worth €10,000 each.
Created to recognise and promote excellence in clinical research in Portugal, the Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica has, for over four decades, established itself as one of the country’s most prestigious distinctions in the field of medicine, rewarding works that contribute to the advancement of knowledge and the improvement of clinical practice.
Applications for the 2026 edition will be assessed by a jury chaired by Jaime Branco, rheumatologist and Full Professor. The panel also includes Miguel Castelo-Branco (Faculty of Health Sciences, U. Beira Interior), Helena Cortez-Pinto (Faculty of Medicine, U. Lisboa), Henrique Cyrne Carvalho (Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences, U. Porto), Ricardo Fontes de Carvalho (Faculty of Medicine, U. Porto), Cristina Nogueira-Silva (School of Medicine, U. Minho), Roberto Palma dos Reis (Faculty of Medical Sciences | Nova Medical School - U. Nova de Lisboa), Isabel Palmeirim (Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, U. Algarve), and Isabel Santana (Faculty of Medicine, U.Coimbra).
“With just a month remaining until the application deadline, now is the time to encourage the medical and scientific community to submit works that reflect the quality, innovation and impact of the clinical research being conducted in Portugal. The Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica has long served as a platform for recognising this excellence and the contribution of research to improving healthcare”, says Jaime Branco, President of the Jury.
Since its creation, the Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica has evaluated 720 submitted works and engaged 1,853 researchers, physicians and scientists. Over 21 editions, it has distinguished 111 works by 316 authors. A total of 44 award-winning works have been published and distributed free of charge to healthcare professionals, amounting to more than 326,000 copies.
According to Luís Portela, Chairman of the Foundation, “the Prémio Bial de Medicina Clínica continues to establish itself as an instrument for promoting clinical research and scientific output with a real impact on medical practice. With applications remaining open until August 31, we wish to encourage researchers and clinicians to submit their work and become part of the history of an award that has recognised some of the most significant contributions to medicine in Portugal”.
