Bial is a family-owned company with a rich history of over 100 years, dedicated to patient welfare.
Over the years, Bial has evolved from a Portuguese, in-licensing commercial company into an innovative, international pharmaceutical organisation, developing and out-licensing its own medicines, and operating directly or through partnerships in some of the world’s most important healthcare markets.
This shift began in the 1990s, when Bial began its Research and Development (R&D) project, and, in the last decades, the birth of its own medicines turned into a reality. In recent years, on average, Bial has funnelled more than 20% of its annual turnover towards R&D, which is focused on neuroscience and rare diseases.
In Europe, Bial has a production unit and an R&D unit in Portugal (headquarters) and branches in various European countries – Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Switzerland. In addition, the company has a presence in the USA and some emerging markets.
Bial's internationalisation strategy also involves the establishment of partnership agreements, collaborating with well-established companies to take its health solutions to all those who need them. Bial products are present in more than fifty countries and make a significant difference in the lives of people all around the world who live with serious illnesses.
