2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to scientists who won the latest edition of the BIAL Award in Biomedicine

The BIAL Foundation congratulates and pays tribute to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman, who were awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine today for their discoveries that have enabled the development of effective vaccines based on mRNA technology to prevent COVID-19.

The work of these prestigious scientists was recognized by the BIAL Foundation in 2022, having won the second edition of the BIAL Award in Biomedicine with the article "Zika virus protection by a single low-dose nucleoside-modified mRNA vaccination", published in the journal Nature.

The BIAL Award in Biomedicine 2021, worth 300,000 euros, distinguished the remarkable work of Karikó, Weissman, and 35 other co-authors. The paper represented an important advance in mRNA technology for creating vaccines and was published in 2017, even before the pandemic.

Drew Weissman was in Portugal for the award ceremony, leaving his testimony here. Find out all about the award ceremony here.
