He is a retired Professor of Psychiatry and Consciousness Sciences at the Lisbon School of Medicine, University of Lisbon – FMUL (Portugal). He co-founded IMAGINAL, the Portuguese Association of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis. He co-authored the books “Psicologia da consciência – Uma perspectiva transpessoal [Psychology of consciousness – A transpersonal perspective]” (2003) and “Hipnose clínica – Teoria, pesquisa e prática [Clinical hypnosis – Theory, research, and practice]” (2013). His primary research interests include the psychology and psychophysiology of altered and amplified states of consciousness, clinical hypnosis, ethnomedicine, human exceptional experiences, and the intersection between psychology and spirituality.
He holds a master’s degree and a PhD in Psychiatry from FMUL.
In addition, he co-founded the Portuguese and Brazilian Association for Transpersonal Psychology (ALUBRAT), serving as its President from 1996 to 2004. He was the Director of the Postgraduate Course in Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis at FMUL from 2001 to 2018 and served as Director of the Laboratory of Mind-Matter Interaction with Therapeutic Intention (LIMMIT) at FMUL from 2015 to 2023.
