Applications for the Nuno Grande Doctoral Scholarships 2025 are now open, with a global amount of €75,000. Eligible candidates include Portuguese or foreign citizens, holders of a degree or master’s in Medicine, who are involved in medical teaching at any Portuguese medical school and are enrolled in a doctoral programme in the area of Fundamental Health Sciences at a Portuguese university.
Starting with the 2025 edition, the Nuno Grande Doctoral Scholarships will triple the number of scholarships awarded, extending for the first time to all Portuguese universities. In total, three scholarships of €25,000 each will be granted to Doctoral students in Fundamental Health Sciences.
To honour the memory of the renowned physician, researcher, and professor who founded the Abel Salazar School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (ICBAS) and was connected to the Bial Foundation for over 20 years, the family of Professor Nuno Grande, the ICBAS, and the Bial Foundation created the Nuno Grande Doctoral Scholarship in 2022.
“This decision to extend the Nuno Grande Doctoral Scholarships nationwide further honours the memory of Professor Nuno Grande, whose vision was deeply inclusive and far-reaching. We aim to encourage young physicians from all over the country to combine medical practice with teaching and research,” says Luís Portela, chairman of the Bial Foundation.
In previous editions, scholarships were awarded to research projects in various areas of Fundamental Health Sciences: in 2024 to Leonardo Moço, in the field of hemato-oncology; in 2023 to João Moura, in the field of encephalitis; and in 2022 to Daniel Oliveira, in the field of lupus.
